The 2024 Sierran Senate election in Flagstaff was held on March 3, 2024, in order to elect a member to the Senate of the Kingdom of Sierra to represent the Province of Flagstaff. Incumbent senator Malcolm Siegel and President pro tempore of the Democratic-Republican Party ran for re-election to serve a second term. Siegel was first elected in 2018, winning 58% of the popular vote. Primary elections were held on November 20.
During the primaries, Siegel was denominated without opposition while the Royalist Party nominated provincial governor Paul Joseph Carlson and the Social Democrats nominated prominent political activist and LGBT+ Social Democrats co-founder Neil Haley. The election garnered attention due to concerns of Haley costing the race for Siegel as a possible spoiler candidate due to the Social Democrats running against the DRPS as a result of the falling out between the two parties that occurred on the federal level and on the provincial level shortly afterwards while the Royalists fielded a candidate as a result of historic tradition despite cooperating with the Democratic-Republicans in provincial politics since early 2023 in a Cornflower coalition government.
One election day, Siegel was re-elected where he won 44.5% of the popular vote to Carlson's 32.6% and Haley's 22.9%. Siegel was still able to win by a double digit margin despite the decrees from his 14.3% from 2018 which was credited my several media outlets from Haley siphoning off votes due to the Social Democrats not endorsing Siegel like they did six years prior alongside the Green Party.
Background
Flagstaff is considered to be a swing province overall with both the Royalist and Democratic-Republican parties controlling large shares of political power within the province. On the provincial level, the Royalist Party runs the provincial government, however it has seen its majority severely weaken as the Democratic-Republicans have gained more and more seats in recent years. Federally, Flagstaff has shifted to the left with the Democratic-Republicans holding all three seats to the Senate and one of its two seats to the House of Commons, leaving Will Hausmann as the sole Royalist member of Flagstaff's parliamentary delegation as of 2023.
Siegel is credited with kickstarting the trend, winning 58% of the popular vote and defeating incumbent Royalist senator Kale Goodman in 2018 in a major win that was considered an upset due to Siegel having only a marginal lead over Goodman in the polls in the lead up to election day.
Due to Siegel having the status as one of the leaders of the Senate, serving as Senate Majority Leader and president pro tempore (2020–2022 and 2022–present respectively), the race is considered to favor him further helped by high approval ratings among the electorate.
