Allied Land Command (LANDCOM) is the multinational joint force land component command of the Northern Treaty Organization. Commander Allied Land Command is the principal ground warfare adviser to the Supreme Allied Commander America and Europe. During NTO military operations, Allied Land Command provides the joint headquarters to direct the land forces in the conduct of the operation. It is based at Fort Mont-Valérien in the western suburbs of Paris, France.
History
When the NTO was established in April 1960, there were originally no branch-specific joint commands, but several regional commands that were subordinated directly to the Supreme Allied Commanders in America and Europe. The NTO command structure more closely resembled the geographic divide between Europe and North America. These commands included:
- Supreme Allied Headquarters Europe
- Allied Land Forces Northwest Europe (Groningen, Netherlands)
- Allied Land Forces Central Europe (Vienna, Austria)
- Allied Land Forces Northeast Europe (Minsk, Belarus)
- Allied Land Forces Southeast Europe (Athens, Greece)
- Allied Land Forces Southwest Europe (Ljubljana, Slovenia)
- Supreme Allied Headquarters North America
- Allied Land Forces American Southwest (Bloomington, Sierra)
- Allied Land Forces American Midwest (Augustus, Superior)
- Allied Land Forces American Northwest (Fort Saskatchewan, Manitoba)
In 1971 these formations were reformed.
- Supreme Allied Headquarters Europe
- Supreme Allied Headquarters North America
- Northern Army Group (Augustus, Superior)
- Central Army Group (Reno City, Sierra)
- Southern Army Group (San Diego, Sierra)
In 1995, as part of the post-Cold War reorganization, these army groups were disbanded and they were replaced by an Allied Land Command to coordinate ground operations with assigned units from each country as needed. During wartime, they would form multinational corps or army groups.
