The Astor family is a prominent dynastic family of Italian-German origin that has been involved in politics, business, and various other ventures in Astoria. John Jacob Astor, the progenitor of the modern Astor family, is considered to be the principal founding father of Astoria (with the name being dervived from the word Astor) while his descendent, Gephardt Astor, is the founding father of the modern Astorian republic. The Astor family is considered to be the most influential family in Astoria, in both business and politics.
The modern Astor family was established by John Jacob Astor, a German-born American businessman who, through his fur trade monopoly, became the first multi-millionaire in American history. In the 1840s, Astor family became increasingly interested in the Oregon Country, with John Jacob Astor being a primary financial supporter of the expansionist policies of James K. Polk. The Astor family relocated from New York City to the budding settlement of Astor City in 1860, under the direction of John Jacob's son, Kier Astor. Capitalizing on widespread discontent towards the federal government, the Astor family led the territory in seceding from the United States in 1863.
The family was originally intended to be elevated to the status of royal family in Astoria, though after the establishment of the British protectorate over he country in 1864, those hopes were dashed. Under the Commonwealth of Astoria, the Astor family maintained a large political and economic influence over the country. Kier Astor, his descendants, and other members of the family served in influential positions within the protectorate. Following the overthrow of the democratically elected government in 1901, and from 1901 to 1909, the country came under the direct control of the Astor family, primarily Gephardt Astor, who served as the first President of Astoria. This lasted until the restoration of democracy with the Constitution of Astoria.
In the present day, the Astor family is the wealthiest family in Astoria and is one of the most wealthiest families in the world, having a net word of $TBD billion. The family maintains a considerable amount of influence in national politics and in the national economy. The Astor family has maintained a historic partnership with the National Democratic Party and some members of the family have had roles in other Astorian and Anglo-American conservative movements. The family maintains a controlling stake in Astorco, one of the largest multinational conglomerates in the world, and remains heavily involved in company affairs and management. Involvement in Freemasonry by some Astors, along with the family's overall economic and political influence, has thrusted the family into the center of a number of conspiracy theories.
