Eduardo "Ed" James Gonzales (born February 9, 1963) is a Brazorian politician serving as chancellor of the Kingdom of Brazoria since 2019 and has served as a member of the Diet of Brazoria for Greater Odessa in Pecos Province since 2011. A member of the People's Party, Gonzales has been a party member since 2001 and has been the party's leader since 2016. He served as Leader of the Opposition from 2016 to 2019 after succeeding Edward Sheen as the party's leader.
Gonzales was born in the city of Odessa in Pecos Province during the era of the Brazorian Confederation. He would attend the University of Houston after graduating high school and would graduate university in 1990 with a degree in political science. During the Yellowrose Revolution of 1989, Gonzales supported the revolution and backed the toppling of the Landonist government. During the Interbellum period, Gonzales was a member of the Federalist Party, but left the party in 1995 to protest its leadership which backed Jacob Milton. He would support the Pecan Revolution of 2000 and would join the People's Party after it was formed and would back the creation of the democratic parliamentary government and a constitutional monarchy, Brazoria's current political and government structure.
Gonzales would enter politics for the first time in 2011 to run for the Diet in the general election that year after the incumbent, Jacob Bernier, announced plans to retire to run for hte Corte. Gonzales would win the People's Party nomination and would be elected to the chamber during the general election. From 2011 to 2016, Gonzales would be a somewhat well-known and bipartisan MP, but would gain significatn media attention once he ran for the People's Party leadership during the leadership election that year and would ultimately win. As Leader of the Opposition, he would oppose the government of Eva Delaney of the Democratic Socialist Party and would lead the party to victory in 2019. Gonzales would lead the party into another victory in 2023, however he saw minor losses to the People's Party and entered protracted efforts to form a government after the election, ultimately succeeding with the creation of the Second Gonzales government on September 27 with the backing of the People's Party, Federalists, the Libertarians, and even the Green Party, thus allowing him to remain in office as chancellor.
Since becoming chancellor, Ed Gonzales has governed in a moderate fashion, overseeing a center-right government and seeking bipartisanship when possible. On domestic policy, Gonzales has lowered all major tax rates and repealed the estate tax and other progressive tax laws passed by Delaney. Gonzales has maintained many social programs, but has avoided increasing their size and has maintained the same amount of budget and funding sizes for them. In regards tot he National Health Program, Gonzales has kept the program, but has opposed expanding it and has supported private alternatives to it with the Healthcare Opportunity Act. On foreign policy, Gonzales has increased Brazoria's ties to the Conference of American States and the European Community, being an American unionist, and has taken a more hardline stance against the United Commonwealth in the wake of the Caribbean diplomatic crisis.
