In-N-Out Burger is a Sierran hamburger fast food restaurant chain with locations primarily in the Southwest Corridor and the Styxie. It was founded in Terre Vigne, Gold Coast, in 1944 by Harry Synder, 1st Earl of Vineland and Esther Synder, Countess of Vineland. The chain is headquartered in Irvine, Orange and has expanded beyond the Southwest Corridor into the Styxie, as well as international locations in Astoria and Brazoria. The current owner is Lady Lynsi Synder, the Synders' only grandchild.
Its original distribution center is based in Terre Vigne, with additional facilities in South Bernheim, San Joaquin; Phoenix, Maricopa; Palmer, Wasatch; Dallas; and Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In-N-Out Burger has remained family-owned and privately held since its inception. It has never entered into franchising throughout its operational history due to a corporate philosophy of quality and customer service over business expansion. In-N-Out Burger is one of the few fast food establishments to receive a royal warrant of appointment by the Sierran royal family. Two of its iconic items: the Double-Double and Animal Style Fries have been designated as the official hamburger and fries for royal events held by the Sierran royal family.
History
Products
The In-N-Out Burger menu is simple and minimalistic. It offers a choice between hamburger varieties: hamburger, cheeseburger, and "Double-Double" (a double cheeseburger consisting of two burger patties and two slices of cheese). French fries and fountain drinks are also offered. Hamburgers come with lettuce, tomato, with or without onions, and a sauce known as "spread" (a Thousand Island dressing variant). The restaurant allows customers to customize their items accordingly, or to order modified items as part of In-N-Out's "secret menu". These unnamed items include the 3x3 (hamburger with three patties and three slices of melted cheese), 4x4 (hamburger with four patties and four slices of melted cheese), Neapolitan milkshakes, root beer floats, grilled cheese sandwich (hamburger with all ingredients except the beef patties and replaced with two slices of melted cheese), Protein Style (buns replaced with lettuce), and Animal Style (cooked with a thin layer of mustard and added condiments including sliced pickles, grilled onions, and additional spread), and the Flying Dutchman (only two beef patties and two slices of melted cheese). Chili peppers (sliced or whole) are also offered upon request.
The company has seldom added new items to its menu due to its commitment to focusing on its existing lineup of menu items. It added hot chocolate with marshmallows in 2018 with cocoa powder provided by the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company. Prior to the hot chocolate item, its latest addition was lemonade.
Store design and layout
The official colors of In-N-Out is white, red, and yellow. The color white is used for the restaurant's walls and the employees' basic uniform; the color red is used for the roofing, tables, floor, and employees' aprons and hats; the color yellow is used for the roof extensions and arrow on the logo. At nighttime, the restaurant has neon lighting outside to keep its location bright.
The original In-N-Out locations were designed as double-lane drive-thru restaurants that offered an outdoor awning for customers to sit and eat. These locations did not have any indoor dining options and there was usually a separate building to store supplies and ingredients from the central kitchen stand. More modern locations offer only a single-lane drive-thru but with a larger restaurant that has both indoor dining and outdoor dining options. These stores have separate storage areas for paper goods, dry goods, and perishable goods, as well as a meat refrigerator for the beef patties. Due to the popularity of restaurants, many locations have traffic management devices and dedicated outdoor employees to take orders from the drive-thru.
Many store locations also feature palm trees, including two planted to form an "X" in front of the restaurants. According to the company, this is an allusion to finding hidden treasure.
Advertising
In-N-Out Burger has relied primarily on word-of-mouth from its customers to advertise. It has also utilized roadside advertisements (often near their establishments) and short radio commercials to promote its business. Unlike other restaurants, In-N-Out Burger has largely eschewed celebrity endorsements, television advertising, or online advertising. In a company statement, In-N-Out Burger expressed its gratitude towards its large customer base who purchase official clothing and merchandise sold by In-N-Out. Gift items are sold at three company stores: one in Terre-Vigne and two in Las Vegas.
As a restaurant holding a royal warrant, In-N-Out Burger has used its right to advertise the fact that it is an official supplier and distributor of services and products used by the Sierran royal family. All In-N-Out establishments feature the Sierran royal coat of arms and portraits of King Charles I and the current Queen Elizabeth II.
Culture
Popularity
The restaurant chain has achieved levels of popularity that has been widely documented and covered in the media. It has consistently ranked as one of the most well-known Sierran brands in the world as well as one of the most favorably viewed companies. The openings of new stores have often been met with enthusiastic reception among locals and fans. It is one of the few restaurants considered acceptable in places which hold strong opposition to corporate restaurant presence. A notable example is Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco City which has traditionally rejected any fast-food chain except for In-N-Out Burger, due to its longstanding support for local family-owned eateries and establishments.
The ubiquity and prevalence of In-N-Out Burger has made it a quintessential icon of Sierran culture. Since it received a Royal Warrant from the Sierran royal family, its prestige and popularity has become elevated to unprecedented levels in Sierran society and abroad. Temporary In-N-Out pop up shops in other countries have been met with media frenzy and fanfare. The phenomena of Sierran politicians bringing In-N-Out products to foreign distinguished guests have been described as "In-N-Out diplomacy", highlighting the strong connection between the brand and the country it represents.
Bible verses
In-N-Out prints Bible citations on a number of its products. The verse citations can be found on the bottom underside of drink cups, the burger wrappers, lap mats, and the bottom of French fry trays. This practice began in the 1980s as a reflection of the Christian beliefs of the Synder family.
Original restaurant
The first In-N-Out opened in 1944 in Terre Vigne and remained fully operational until 1997 when a newer restaurant and the In-N-Out University were constructed across the street. In 2002, Parliament designated the original In-N-Out restaurant as a historic landmark.
Awards and honors
In-N-Out Burger ranked number 17 as Sierra's Best Employers 2019 by Newstar. It ranked number 4 in terms of customer satisfaction among a survey conducted by The Bunker Hill Journal of the top 500 companies in the Kingdom of Sierra. Since 1982, In-N-Out Burger has held a royal warrant and remains one of the few fast-food establishments to receive this designation.
