Herzog Gruppe GmbH & Co. KG, known as Herzog (German pronunciation: [/ˈhɛrˌtsoːk/]) or Herzog Gruppe, is a German multinational conglomerate based in Hanover, Germany. It is one of the largest private companies in Europe and has international presence in over 160 countries. It comprises several subsidiaries across a diverse lineup of products, services, and industries. Its Asian regional headquarters is based in the German imperial territory of Qingdong while its Americas-based headquarters is based in New Brandenburg, Superior.
Founded in 1898 by Peter Herzog initially as a mining company, Herzog diversified into areas including shipbuilding, construction, manufacturing, and hospitality. In the late 1960s, following Great War II, Herzog entered the electronics and real estate industries, and expanded its operations into the Americas and Asia.
As of March 2023, it employs over 211,000 employees, with over 90,000 in Germany, making it one of Germany's top employers. Its largest subsidiaries are Herzog Foods, Herzog Motors (which includes Automobilwerk Eisenach or AWE and the Wartburg marque), Herzog Pacific, and the Baudelaire Hotel Group. Other notable subsidiaries include Spranx Insurance and Hannover Systems.
History
Herzog Gruppe was founded in 1898 by Peter Herzog, a German entrepreneur who inherited his father's coal mining enterprise and real estate properties. Herzog exercised exceptional business acumen and formed strong contacts with other business partners, raising enough capital to purchase his own shipyard in Hamburg. By 1912, Herzog acquired significant wealth from his vertical integration plan in the logistics and shipbuilding industry. He bought the Hanover-based Schubert Electrical, which expanded Herzog's ventures into electrical engineering and manufacturing. By 1920, the Herzog brand had established various products including light bulbs, radios, telegrams, and automotive parts.
Herzog established its first overseas branch office in the United Kingdom in 1922, followed by Switzerland in 1923. In 1925, Herzog acquired Automobilwerk Eisenach and took over the firm's automotive production and design. The Herzog Motors division was created in response to Herzog's foray into the vehicle manufacturing industry. In 1927, Herzog opened its aircraft manufacturing division and became a contractor for Luftwaffe. Herzog's investments into the vehicle manufacturing industries transformed the company into one of the largest German companies by the eve of Great War I. According to the 1930 German national census, nearly 80,000 Germans were employed by Herzog or its subsidiaries. The company had also become an established presence in other parts of the German-speaking world such as Austria and Superior.
Operations
