Prince Esteban, Duke of Guadalupe (Esteban Juann Nicholas de Habsburg de Brazos; born April 10, 1979) is the heir apparent to the Brazorian throne. He is the eldest son of Juan Carlos II and Elizabeth-Marie Dalton.

Born in Phoenix, Esteban spent the first decade of his life living in exile in the Kingdom of Sierra. In 1989, at the age of ten, Esteban was made heir apparent to the Brazorian throne following the restoration of the monarchy and the ascension of his father as the new king. He is the second-youngest person to be made heir apparent to the Brazorian throne, following his great-great grandfather Juan Carlos I, who was three years old when becoming heir apparent. As he was a minor, Esteban was not made the Duke of Guadalupe, the official title of the heir apparent to the Brazorian throne, until his seventeenth birthday. Esteban attended the University of Grand Llano before training at the Grand Llano Royal Military Academy.

As heir apparent and a member of the Brazorian royal family, Esteban performs official duties on behalf of both his father and his family. Esteban has undertaken a number of charity works, primarily for disabled children and veterans. He has also supported the charity efforts of his siblings, working with charities related to wildlife conservation, mental health improvement, educational disabilities, and climate change. As heir to the throne, Esteban has represented his father diplomatically more so than other members of the royal family, attending diplomatic events and summits in both Brazoria and other nations. In 2003, he married Infanta Olívia of Portugal and has four children: Prince Alejandro, Princess Louisa, Prince Marcus, and Prince Juan.

Early life and education

Esteban Juan Nicholas María de Habsburg de Brazos was born on April 10, 1979 in Phoenix, Maricopa, a province of the Kingdom of Sierra. He was born at the Phoenix General Hospital to Juan Carlos de Habsburg de Brazos and Elizabeth-Marie Dalton. Esteban was born into the House of Habsburg de Brazos, the former royal house of Brazoria, which had operated in exile since the abolition of the monarchy in 1931. He was named after his great-grandfather, Esteban III of Brazoria, who was the last sovereign of the First Kingdom of Brazoria. He was born the eldest child and son, having three younger siblings, and as such was named heir to the then defunct throne of Brazoria following his grandfather, Prince Nicholas, Duke of Guadalupe, and the ascension of his father as head of the House of Habsburg de Brazos.

At the age of five, Esteban began his primary education in Phoenix, attending St. Michael's Catholic School, a private Avignon Catholic school in downtown Phoenix. Following the Yellowrose Revolution and the restoration of the monarchy, Esteban remained in Phoenix with his mother and siblings for approximately one year before moving into the newly-constructed New Palace of Grand Llano in 1990. For his middle school education, Esteban was privately tutored at the New Palace, as there were a number of concerns regarding his safety. Esteban attended the Cornellian College, a private boarding high school, from 1993 to 1997. At the Cornellian College, he excelled in mathematics and science, and played for the school's soccer and golfing teams. He graduated from Cornellian College in 1997 and spoke at his graduation ceremony in the capacity of the heir to the throne.

Esteban attended the University of Grand Llano from 1997 to 2001, studying mathematics and earth science. At university, he was a popular target of the paparazzi and the Brazorian media tabloids, who were interested in his life in college. Following an incident in 1999 were a photographer was arrested after attempting to enter one of Esteban's classes, the Parliament of Brazoria passed a resolution setting rules and restrictions regarding the photographing of royals outside of official duties. Along with that, the University of Grand Llano barred photographers and journalists from entering campus without administration approval for the remainder of Esteban's time at the university. He graduated from the University of Grand Llano in 2001, earning a bacherlor's degree in statistics and an associate's degree in geological science.

In accordance with royal tradition, he received a military education at the Grand Llano Royal Military Academy following the completion of his education at university. Following the completion of his basic training, Esteban was enlisted into reserved service in the Brazorian Army, as active combat was viewed as too dangerous for the heir apparent to the throne. Following military academy, Esteban proposed to and married Infanta Olívia, who became the Duchess of Guadalupe following their marriage ceremony.

Duke of Guadalupe

Following the restoration of the monarchy, Esteban was immediately made the heir apparent to the restored Brazorian crown. At the age of ten, he became the second youngest individual to become the heir apparent to the Brazorian throne, following his great-great grandfather Juan Carlos I, who was three years old. Esteban was ceremonially designated as the heir apparent to the throne during the coronation of his father in 1990. He was not made Duke of Guadalupe, the traditional title of the heir apparent to the Brazorian throne, until he was seventeen years old in 1996, which in in Brazoria is the age of majority.

At the request of his father, Esteban did not officially assume the duties of the heir apparent and the responsibilities of being a working member of the royal family, until the completion of his university education. Following his honeymoon in 2004, Esteban and his wife visited the Kingdom of Sierra, meeting Queen Elizabeth I at the Occidental Palace and Prime Minister Matthew Briggs at the Getty House. In January of 2005, Esteban made an unannounced trip to Syria, where he greeted Brazorains deployed on the frontline of the Syrian Civil War. In June of 2005, he served as regent for a total of three hours while his father received surgery for an undisclosed back issue. He attended both the state funeral of Elizabeth I of Sierra in October of 2005 and the coronation of Charles II in January of 2006 alongside his father.

Esteban and his wife visited France in 2011, where they observed Restoration Day celebrations alongside Henry VII of France. In the same trip, they also visited Jean, Prince Royal at the Château de Sainte-Assise, where the two held a joint-press conference speaking on Brazorian-French relations. He participated in the San Antonio Marathon in 2012, raising money for cancer research. In March of 2012, Esteban and his wife visited Superior, meeting Christian I of Superior and his cousin, William, Prince of Lakota. On the final day of his visit, Esteban and William both participated in a charity event hosted in New Hamburg.

Beginning in 2014, Esteban became a regular attendee of the State Opening of Parliament. In both 2020 and 2022, he sat on the throne adjacent to his father, which is traditionally reserved for the consort of the monarch. In both instances, his mother was ill at the time and was unable to attend. In May of 2015, he acted as regent for the second time in his tenure as heir to the throne, after his father was briefly hospitalized following a health scare. In May of 2016, he was a guest lecturer at the University of Houston, speaking to a class about the history of the Brazorian royal family and his ancestor, John of Austria. Esteban starred in The Yellowrose Way, a documentary about the contemporary Brazorian royal family which premiered in February of 2019. In October of 2019, Esteban visited Manitoba in one of his first solo state visits, meeting with Prime Minister Alexander McCarthy. While in Manitoba, Esteban met with Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, the first meeting between the two.

In January of 2020, a clip of Esteban yelling expletives at paparazzi who were gathered in front of his son's school went viral, prompting both an apology from Esteban and a condemnation from the New Palace, who condemned the photographers for "harassing" Prince Alejandro at school. In June of 2020, Esteban tested positive for COVID-19 virus, but recovered a week later. Esteban engaged in his first public event following the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2021, attending a charity event in Dallas a week after the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. In August of 2021, Esteban and his wife attended the wedding of his second cousin, Prince Henry of Lakota, in his first foreign visit since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. In August of 2022, Esteban represented his father at the 2022 Point Dana Summit, making it the second time he has represented his father at the monarchial summit. Personal life

While participating in a state visit to Portugal with his mother in 1998, Esteban met Infanta Olívia, the youngest daughter of King Dom João VIII and his second wife, Marie Victoria of Reuss. The two first met at a state banquet at the Palace of Queluz and with encouragement by their parents, remained in contact with each other well afterwards. In 2000, it was confirmed that Esteban and Olívia had begun a romantic relationship, with the two moving in together in a house outside of San Antonio.

Their relationship attracted significant media attention, as their relationship was the first between two members of separate royal families since the restoration of the Brazorian monarchy. In 2001, the two moved into a gated suburb of Grand Llano in order to avoid media harassment. Olívia and her family attended Esteban's graduation from the Grand Llano Royal Military Academy and beginning in 2002, she began to take a more active role in the Brazorian royal family, assuming duties befitting of the wife to the heir to the throne, leading to great speculation. The couple became engaged on December 23, 2002 and their engagement was announced personally by Juan Carlos II during his annual Christmas Day address.

Their wedding took place on February 12, 2003 at the Cathedral of St. Mary of Guadalupe in Grand Llano. Their wedding was attended by various royal and foreign dignitaries and was viewed by a television audience of over 3 million globally. Esteban and Olívia moved into the Drake House, located in East Denver, following their marriage. Olívia's first pregnancy was announced in May of 2003 and on November 21, 2003 Olívia gave birth the couple's first child and son, Prince Alejandro. The couple went on to have three more children: Princess Louise on April 20, 2005, Prince Marcos on July 7, 2009, and Prince Juan on October 23, 2011.

Esteban has a strong interest in various sports, though he is particularly fond of association football, also known as soccer. He is a passionate supporter of Grand Llano F.C. and has attended every home game since 2016. He also has attended every Summer Olympic game since 2018, supporting the Brazorian National Olympic Team. Esteban refers to English and Spanish as his native languages and he is fluent in German, French, and is knowledgeable in Portuguese.

Esteban is a second cousin of William II of Superior and his siblings. They are related through William's mother, Evelyn, Queen Emerita, who is a first cousin of Juan Carlos II and a grandchild of Esteban III. He is the godfather of his nephew, Prince Afonso of Portugal, who is second-in-line to the Portuguese throne.
