Superior-United Commonwealth relations, also known as Superian–Continental relations, refers to the international relationship between the Kingdom of Superior and United Commonwealth of Continental States. Diplomatic relations between the two states have historically been strained, with both nations hostile towards each other throughout their shared histories. Superior was formed from several American states in the Midwest that broke off during the War of Contingency in what is now known as the Superian Revolution. The war ended with Superior becoming an independent state and being recognized as such by the United Commonwealth following the Treaty of Salinas.
Throughout the 19th century, Superior and the United Commonwealth maintained existing, but limited diplomatic relations as the United Commonwealth struggled to move on from the Contingency War, though diplomatic contact became more active in the 1880s. While not involved, Superior would support the United Commonwealth during the Spanish–American War along with the Northeast Union, Kingdom of Sierra, and Brazoria against the Spanish Empire. During the Continental Revolutionary War, Superior would back the Federalist government and would participate in the allied intervention after communist rebellion lead by Jani Schmidt in 1919 inspired by that of the Continentalist Party. The intervention failed and in 1921 the Treaty of Bernheim was signed where Superior recognized the Continental States as the legitimate claimant as the "United Commonwealth" but relations remained tense regardless. Between 1932 and 1938, Superior fought the United Commonwealth during the Great War after the latter invaded Superior in April 1932. Superior would suffer heavy damage during the war and saw large portions of its territory occupied by Continental forces and administered by the collaborationist Superian Continental Republic until the liberation efforts were completed in 1938.
During the Cold War Superior was part of the Western Bloc lead by Sierra and the United Kingdom and was opposed to the Continental States and the Eastern Bloc. The Superior–United Commonwealth border would be heavily militarized during this period as both countries stationed large numbers of troops and war material in case of a second war between the two neighboring countries, though that never came to pass. The diplomatic approach between the two countries varied by government and phase in the Cold War, but was largely antagonistic or openly hostile until the 1990s where both countries pursued detente and signed the Saint Anthony Agreement in 1998 to end the Cold War in the Superian capital itself. The 1990s also saw Superior normalize relations with the United Commonwealth with the latter doing the same and continued well into the new millennium even after the United Conservative Party won in 2003, however efforts would be slowed down under president Alexander Harper. The end of the Cold War with the Revolutions of 2000 helped compel both countries to pursue normalization, however hesitancy and open opposition by many existed within both countries due to still existing ideological and political differences and conflicting interests.
During the presidency of Jennifer Granholm, Superior made great overtures to the United Commonwealth leading to the normalization of relations. A diplomatic summit in 2017 reopened embassies in both countries and a followup in 2018 in Chicago asserted the continued normalization of relations between the two countries. The topic of Superian–Continental relations has been a source of controversy in both nations with many in both countries holding on to the past grudges and conflicts between the two countries. The topic has also risen once more following the victory of Isaac Dillon in the 2022 Superian federal election who ran on an ardent anti-Landonist platform and has promised to undo diplomatic normalization as President.
