The 2017 Superior–United Commonwealth diplomatic summit, also known as the Winnipeg summit and the Superian–Continental summit, was a historic diplomatic conference and summit held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, between the Kingdom of Superior and the United Commonwealth with the intent on restarting and re-establishing formal diplomatic relations between the two countries. The summit was the start of a new era of bilateral relations after over a century of hostility and antagonism. The summit also coincided with the opening of new embassies in both Chicago and Saint Anthony respectively. The Government of Manitoba sponsored the event per the request of the Superian and Continental governments.
The summit was held from June 2nd to the 8th after the Continental government accepted the request of President Jennifer Granholm to hold the summit as part of her foreign policy of renormalizing relations between both Superior and the United Commonwealth. The summit was held in the Centennial Concert Hall and was the first time that Continental government officials traveled and met on Superian soil. The summit garnered international media attention and was a high profile event. The summit was positively received in both Superior and the United Commonwealth as well as other nations both in Anglo-America and beyond, though nationalist elements in both nations were opposed due to historic rivalries between the two states.
Background
Following her election to office, Superian President Jennifer Granholm stated her top foreign policy goal would be the "establishment and re-kindling of relations" with Superior's eastern neighbor, the United Commonwealth of Continental States. Since the nation's independence from the United States (the UC's predecessor state), Superior and the United Commonwealth have had a tense and largely hostile relationship, which would be exacerbated following the Great War. All forms of diplomatic relations would be halted during the Cold War, where Anti-United Commonwealth and Anti-Superian sentiments would run high in both countries. Following the conclusion of the Cold War, relations between the two rivals would begin to calm down, though diplomatic relations between the two nations would continue to be none existent, with Sierra being a mediator between the two.
Following Granholm's foreign policy announcement, Secretariat of the United Commonwealth and General Secretary of the Continentalist Party Anthony Malito would commend Granholm on her plan, blaming conservative elements in Superior for the lack of diplomatic relations and promising hopeful co-operation between the two rivals. With a majority of her first term domestic agenda completed by late 2016, Granholm would begin to shift her attention to foreign policy. In early 2017, after negotiations with Continental diplomats, Granholm would announce that a diplomatic summit between Superior and the United Commonwealth would be held later that year in Winnipeg, Manitobana. Following that, in a official statement through social media, Malito would confirm his attendance at the summit.
