AFF

The AFF World Championship Conference is an annual American football competition organized by the American Football Federation (AFF) and is heavily contested by top-ranking gridiron football clubs in North America, deciding the competition winners through three single-elimination rounds of eighth games total. The winner of the final round is proclaimed the current world champion of the sport. In its present format, each participating association produces the two highest-ranking teams in their respective leagues to represent the nation in the annual tournament. The conference begins in early March with the quarterfinals, followed by the semifinals the following week and the finals which are generally scheduled near the end of the month.

History

  • Based in Conference of American States
    • Formation of various independent leagues; 1910s–1970s
      • The Astorian American Football Conference/AAFC is the longest-running conference (1945), with the Pro Bowl being adopted by foreign leagues: first Superior (1954), Sierra (1959), lastly Brazoria (1971).
      • Earliest attempt at pan-American football would be the Anglo-American Football League (1980–1982), which ended in bankruptcy. 16 teams, 4 each nation.
    • Since bad early attempts at pan-American leagues, some post-season matches based on overall rankings are made for special holidays and events; 1980s–90s
      • Sierra-home Game – Rose Bowl
      • Brazoria-home Game – Cotton Bowl
      • Astoria-home Game – Cedar Bowl
      • Superior-home Game – Turkey Bowl
    • Federation and the world title; 1990s–Present
      • Yearly rotation
      • Finals' streaks:
        • Green Bay Packers (1996–1997) – Superior
