The 2020 summit of the Group of Eight was originally scheduled to be held on June 10–12, 2020, in Reno City, Sierra, but it was cancelled due to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Planned venue
Several locations were considered by the Government of Sierra to host the summit before settling with Reno City, Reno province in late 2019. On 3 December 2019 it was officially announced that the G8 summit would be held in Reno City.
Postponements and cancellation
In April 2020, Sierran Prime Minister Nemesis Heartwell decided to cancel the summit and suggested that it could be held virtually as a video conference as the world became concerned with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in May 2020 she later said that the G8 could be held in person at a later time in the year. German Chancellor Karl Laschet declined to attend a summit, while the French and Japanese prime ministers, Oscar de Saint-Just and Kazuma Amamiya, both supported holding an in-person G8 summit in the second half of 2020.
Participants
In early 2020 Nemesis Heartwell announced that as this year's host of the G8 she wanted to invite India, Korea, Manchuria, and Brazil to the summit as possible future full members of the Group, saying that "I don't believe that the existing G8 fully represents what is going on in the world." The Royalists supported the initiative, and the Anglo-American media interpreted it as an attempt by the party to turn the Group into an anti-China and anti-Continental coalition. The China–Sierra trade war and the tensions between Sierra and the UCCS during the Heartwell ministry were seen as the reason. In phone calls with Heartwell during early June 2020 the leaders of the four countries (Emperor Alfonso II of Brazil, Indian Prime Minister Madanmohan Singh, Korean President Im Tae-joon, and Manchurian President Liu Zhou) all accepted the invitation. Brazilian emperor Alfonso II would have been the first monarch to attend a G8 summit as a country representative. Reportedly, the Japanese and Tondolese prime ministers Amamiya and Rodrick Toh supported this initiative and new direction, German Chancellor Laschet and French prime minister Saint-Just were neutral, while the rest did not support it.
After the 2020 Sierran federal election in May, Heartwell was replaced as prime minister as Susan Kwon of the Social Democrats. Kwon had opposed the Royalists' efforts at making the G8 directed aggressively against China and the UCCS, and decided to cancel the 2020 summit because of the worsening pandemic.
The other intended participants of the summit included the G8's traditional members as well as representatives of the Conference of American States and the European Community, with the core format being in place since 2007.
