The 2021 Senate primary in the Inland Empire was held on July 1, 2021 to select a replacement for outgoing commissioned senator Eric Pipitone.
On June 1, 2021, incumbent commissioned senator Eric Pipitone, who has served as the Inland Empire's commissioned senator since 2004, announce his retirement as following the start of the 67th Parliament. As with all commissioned senators from the Inland Empire, Pipitone's replacement will be selected by the Inland Empire Provincial Assembly and will be appointed by the Governor. Like most Senate primaries, any candidate, regardless of party affiliation, are allowed to run so long as they have been nominated by a member of the Inland Empire Provincial Assembly. This usually results in more than two candidates from the same party running for election. In order for a candidate to win, they must secure a majority of votes in the Inland Empire Provincial Assembly, which is 76 votes. If no candidate receives a majority, a runoff election between the two top-candidates will occur immediately afterwards.
Preston Barton, a former Member of Parliament, would narrowly secure a majority of votes, being elected as the next comissioned senator of the Inland Empire. Voting would largely be on party lines, with 69 of 70 Royalists and 5 of the 6 Libertarians voting for Barton and all 55 Democratic-Republicans and 2 Greens voting for minority leader Farah Young. The Christian Democrats would be split, with more conservative members of the party's delegation voting for Barton rather than their own party's candidate. 9 out of the 10 Inland Empire Social Democrats would abstain from voting, largely due to disagreements with the Democratic-Republicans. Barton would be immediately sworn in following his election victory.
