House of Bjelbo
With the death of Valdemar IV in 1375, the male line of the House of Estridsen died out. The throne of Denmark therefore passed to Valdemar IV's eldest daughter, Margaret, who was married to Eric XII of Sweden. Margaret's reign would be short lived, and her husband Eric was never crowned King of Denmark himself, but they successfully orchestrated the succession of Denmark to pass to their son, who became Olaf II and I of Denmark and Sweden.

In 1434 the nobles of Denmark elected as king Eric of Pomerania, who was also ruling as King of Norway, uniting the realms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden once more in personal union. Eric was a personal friend of previous Danish king Birger, and had also successfully ousted the detested Christian I of Norway.

After the death of Eric of Pomerania without issue, the throne of Denmark again passed to the House of Bjelbo. The nobles of Denmark elected the nephew of Birger, the son of his brother Eric, Duke of södermanland, who became Magnus II of Denmark, as well as ruler of Norway and Sweden.
House of La Marck
In 1491 the death of Olaf III of Denmark (who also was ruler of Norway and Sweden via the Örebro Union) ended Denmark's rule by the House of Bjelbo. Without a son of his own, Olaf III had selected his son-in-law, Henry I, who had married his only child, Ingeborg, as his successor, beginning rule by the House of La Marck.
