List of Rulers of Bavaria (Merveilles des Morte)
This is a list of rulers of Bavaria (German: Bayern), originally founded as the Duchy of Bavaria around the year 555. Bavaria was conquered by the Carolingian dynasty under Charlemagne in 788, and his descendants ruled Bavaria until the Bavaria's division into a number of rivaling duchies in 895. In 1180 Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor granted Bavaria to Otto I from the House of Wittelsbach, who would rule Bavaria for the next several centuries. Bavaria was often divided among sons following the death of its dukes, leading to a number of partitions. Bavaria would not be formally reunited until the reign of Albert IV (1467-1510), after which Bavaria's succession laws were gradually reformed. In 1357 the Duke of Lower Bavaria was named an imperial elector, a distinction that the later dukes of an united Bavaria inherited. Following the Reformation, the Dukes of Bavaria have been Jungist after 1510.
