List of Spanish Monarchs (Merveilles des Morte)

This is a list of Spanish monarchs, that is, rulers of the country of Spain in the modern sense of the word. After being divided into a number of Christian kingdoms throughout the middle ages, the modern nation of Spain was united in the 15th century, beginning with the reign of Queen Maria of Castile and King John of Aragon. Although the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon continued as separate kingdoms, after this union the two kingdoms remained in personal union and were ruled together as one dominion. The regnal numbers of the Spanish monarchs follow those of the rulers of Asturias, León, and Castile, and thus John I of Aragon became John III of Spain.

Kings of Spain

House of Barcelona

During the reigns of Maria and John, the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon became united under a personal union, leading to the historiography of Spain generally treating their union as the formation for the Kingdom of Spain. Despite this, the two kingdoms were never formally merged into a single entity, and both crowns were treated as separate legally.

House of Luxembourg

After the death of John I in 1468, the thrones of Castile and Aragon were inherited by their only surviving child, Catherine. Through Catherine's marriage to John V of Lotharingia, who subsequently became John II of Spain by right of his wife, the crowns of Castile and Aragon passed to the House of Luxembourg.
