The Ministry of Justice (Chinese: 法務部; pinyin: Fǎwùbù) is an Executive Yuan level cabinet ministry responsible for the general administration of the court system of China, while the Judicial Yuan is responsible for the appointment of judges and overseeing the nation's courts.

History

The Ministry of Justice was established in 1912 upon the establishment of the Republic of China. After China was unified under the Nationalist Government, the Judicial Yuan was inaugurated and the ministry was renamed the Ministry of Judicial Administration and placed under leadership of the Judicial Yuan. In 1943, the ministry was shifted from the Judicial Yuan to the Executive Yuan. After the Chinese Civil War in 1949, the organization was reformed as the Ministry of Justice of the People's Republic of China and the Judicial Yuan was abolished. In February 2000, after the collapse of communism in China, the Judicial Yuan was restored and the Ministry of Justice had its role change to managing the administrative aspects of the court system.
