Session

The Tentative Onworlders, waiting for the day of the tournament, sit in a tavern when someone barges in, asking for a priest as a cross has fallen, pinning someone down. Juan Pablo answers the call and decides to help. Nasoj joins in to help out the fallen cross. The remaining teammates wonder what to do now that there are temporarily two people down. Someone overhears them and says he has entered the competition many times but never won any. Johnny asks if the man knows where the library is and he points him into the right direction. Rok inquires about the history of the city. They head to the library and as they head there, they notice a large crowd of adventurers waiting and meandering around. The library is massive with bookshelves for as far as the eye can see. An old worker walks around and Rok asks if he knows a historian. The worker says he is the one they seek. Rok asks if there are any books regarding the history of the city's tournament. The historian explains that the tournament used to be simple and small, but it has grown more complicated. Rok asks about the prehistory of the city, specifically for a notable individual during the year of the "albatross flying over the lake". The historian says that particular year was only two years before they began numbering years properly. This was about 500 or 600 years ago. The historian then shows them the section of the library that contains the period of the "albatross century".

Rok looks for the name "Bracken" appearing in any of the books. Johnny finds a book for Rok to read and Rok tries to decipher it, which is filled with cryptic messages. They are unable to read it but they believe they should check it out. They decide to keep it a secret that they cannot read it because they would be outed as not from this world if they're unable to read it. The historian inspects the book and says that its script is written which is undecipherable, with an unknown author. The historian releases the book to them. Rok asks if the historian knows if there are anyone who have won the tournament. Many of the house guards were previous winners. Rok asks if there were any particular who were the cream of the crop. The historian says a dwarf named "Duran", who won five or six years ago, was one that was quite memorable, who has retired from house guarding, and lives south of the city, but may be hanging out at the Boar's Head.

They head into the tavern and look for Duran. On the way they debate how much information they can learn from him and how much they should divulge to him, since he is a royal guard. They see a dwarf matching the description who is regaling the crowd of tall, wild stories. Apparently the name of the dwarf is "Enduran". Rok asks one of the bar patrons if they know "Duran". The bar patron laughs and says Duran is pathetic and says he is upstairs. They head upstairs to meet him. Johnnie gets a round of four drinks, with one to bring to Duran. Rok finds the door where Duran is lodging and they knock. Duran asks who is it and the crew responds saying they are adventurers looking for someone to meet, with a drink in hand. Rok says that Enduran downstairs is taking all the credit for Duran. Duran says that is not true. Rok says he won a tournament back then. Duran affirms this. They ask why people are talking badly about him. Duran says he retired for a reason and that back then, he vowed to be a kingsguard and would defend them no matter what. He was assigned to a noble family that was corrupt and broke his vow by killing them. He was then considered an oathbreaker. He says he has no future. The team tries to convince him to join them. Duran then tests them and a strong force compels Jed and Rok to kneel, but Johnnie remains standing. Duran senses they have potential and offers to help them. He says the tournament is already starting, not the day tomorrow. They need to obtain tokens. Those who show up tomorrow are weeded out as not being in the know. The tokens are hidden throughout the city and are only given to those deemed worthy for performing impressive feats. Each individual needs a token to enter the tournament.

Jed and Rok notice Enduran is still telling tall tales and then they challenge him with a tall tale of their own, and to outboast him. They best him and Enduran pulls them aside, and says it was a test. Enduran says that he will be awarding them a token as they exemplified the marks of a true charismatic folk hero. They then try to figure out how to obtain two other tokens. Rok asks where a museum is so they can find a relic similar to the token. They discuss on the way what they can do to capture the attention of crowds.

Once they arrive to the museum, they inspect the artifacts. Rok asks if they have a puzzle night. The curator says they do not, but have a trivia night. Jed and Johnnie explore the museum and see a guarded room with two guards on the post. They go and the guards appear quite friendly, who say they can check out the room. The room inside has a medallion, encased in a glass, which looks identical to Jed's medal. Johnnie tries to distract the guards by casting an illusion but is unable to swipe away the medallion. They get Rok to swipe it away as the guards remain distracted and run away, and Johnnie is able to obtain the medal.

Now having obtained two medals, Rok decides to enter the team into the museum trivia game to get the third medal. The first question, what is the question of the Land of Wind? It is Galestone. They answer correctly. The next: who is the mayor of the Galestone? Gromgar. They answer correctly again. The third question: it is known, below underground, lives the dwarven people of the Wind Kingdom in Molemar. The most recent king's name is Oregram. Correct. Line-cutting is a Class-what offense? III. Correct once again! Storm golems are famous among the dwarven people in this kingdom. When they die, they release gems of power which very few people would know, but what do they taste like. Vanilla. Correct. Only two teams remain. It is now time for "high-octane" trivia. Only five seconds to reply back. Recently, the town of Windward was attacked by an evildoer who unleashed power on orphans. Gene the Polite. They answered correctly. The last question is: what is the year two years before they began calendaring with numerical years. It must be drawn. Rok draws it correctly, of the albatross flying across the lake. Although they are now the last team remaining, there is a final, final question. What is the favorite color of the Mothman family. Jed chuckles and says he is the head of the Mothman family and says his favorite color is green. They win and they obtain the prize, which includes a collector's item copy of the book they checked out at the library. Johnnie is able to read the book and sees the initials of the author reads "R. D." The name of the book is the Origins of the Great Houses. Johnnie begins reading and learns that it is written in first-person narrative and appears to be journal entries. It is from the perspective of someone who was also isekaied into the world as they have. There are various names, including "R. D. Bracken", "Elizabeth", and "Houdini". As he continues reading, he sees that the entries become progressively less detailed and storied. Apathy grows and grows as the story progresses, until the party dissolves. None of the entries indicate the establishment or connection to the currently existing families. Reading through, there is not much help or further insight they can obtain from the book, other than that these people existed.

They then rest and the next day, they arrive before the tournament and present their medals at the entry gate. They are then told to wait an hour before everyone is checked in. They talk with one of the contestants who gives them an in on the tournament. He says that knowledge is crucial to winning the tournament. They enter the tournament venue, which appears to be a library reminiscent to the one they were in earlier. They see the same elder at the library and greet him. The elder asks if they are prepared for the upcoming fight. The elder then stands up and tears his clothes, revealing a chiseled, toned body. He says they have 10 minutes to survive to beat him. He then pulls out a book, "Red Riding Hood", and takes the form of werewolf. He immediately charges Rok and slashes towards him, but misses. Johnnie takes a random book and picks up a reprint of "Red Riding Hood", and immediately changes his outfit to red, and becomes a hooded girl. The elder then diverts his attention towards Johnnie. He has a basket and chucks an apple towards the elder. The apple explodes and damages the elder a bit. Rok then looks for a book with cavemen on it. He finds one and it is the Myth of Sisyphus. The scenery transforms into a steep hill and a boulder appears before him as he is forced to push it. Rok chomps on the rock and spits out projectiles towards the elder. There are pebbles all over the elder's feet. Jed grabs another copy of the Red Riding Hood and transforms into the huntsman with a gun. He shoots at the elder, which takes him out of the werewolf mode. Johnnie also reverts to his normal self. The elder reads the Myth of Sisyphus and suddenly a rain of rocks rain on them all. Only Johnnie gets hit. Johnnie then pulls out a book about vampires, and then transforms into a vampire bat. He then bites the elder on the neck. Rok, as he continues holding the rock, notices another book and tries to read it. The rock then fades away and as he opens a new book, it is a copy of the Wizard of the Oz. A giant tornado emerges. Rok tries to chuck out the rock into the tornado. Jed tries to look for "Jack and the Beanstalk" and turns into a bouncing magic bean. The elder looks at the chaos around and grabs another book. He then transforms into the Avatar and controls the wind and earth. Johnny tries to get a better page from Dracula and transforms into a vampire and bites the elder. Rok grabs his collector's item book and grabs a page. He summons a sun and although Johnny gets slightly burned as a vampire, the elder takes damage. Jed picks up the Holy Bible and then turns into the serpent, and lunges towards the old man and bites him on the neck, the same spot where Johnny bit him. The old man then summons his ally, reading a copy of the trivia booklet, Gromgar. Johnny looks for the Moby Dick and finds one. He transforms into the whale and body slams Gromgar and the elder. The fight then stops and the elder congratulates them. He opens up the Holy Bible again and heals everyone. He tells that they have passed this test as they were willing to use their knowledge of literature to win the fight. They each get a page of Red Riding Hood.

They then return to the town center to await the next stage of the tournament. They have an hour to rest before it is time to fight again. Duran, who has been waiting for them, greets them. The next test is a test of innocence. The next venue is the Mothman Manor. The Tentative Onworlders step in. There are seven participants in total. Dinner will start soon. They see a familiar face, the half-elf who said that he competed already five times in the tournament. It is the half-elf, Julian. He says this is his sixth time. Julian introduces the rest of his party: his brother James, who aspires to be a baker; and his sister Julicia, who is quite shy. There is one other lone person who signs them. He is deaf. Mothman's wife comes down as the hostess and says that this will be a murder mystery party. Their job is to identify correctly each person's role or complete their tasks successfully to win. Murderers and guards cannot mutually win; there will be the role of the jester whose role is to be identified as the murderer.

They each get assigned their role. The first night passes. Lady Mothman narrates that the night was okay. However, Julian was visited by someone and was killed. Julicia and James both claim the roles as lookouts. Julicia says she observed James leaving the house, while James says he observed Mothman as doing nothing. The mute tries to communicate with the rest of the group by miming. He mimes that James is the jester who is trying to get killed. Rok susses out James and suspects he wants out of the tournament. They do not have enough information and decide not to vote. The next night, Julicia dies. The group deliberates. Jed claims he is the sorcerer. They suspect James is the jester and they vote him out. The next night, Johnny dies. The remaining trio ends up turning on Jed. It is a stalemate. Rok was the murderer and the mute was a guardsman. Only the Tentative Onworlders and James proceeds. Duran, in higher spirits, is impressed by the secured victory. He tells them there are two more rounds, with the fourth being a full battle mode which is far more difficult than the other challenges. They rest again, awaiting their next challenge. The final test is to be a trial of willpower. For the third one, they will find out. They must head to the westside of the city for an arena where their third challenge awaits. James says he wishes to lose as soon as possible, so he can return to his bakery.

As they arrive and enter the next arena, they are welcomed by a raucous crowd, where they are to face multiple beasts. The first set of beasts they face are deer. A herd of four. Johnny tries to attack one of the deer, while Rok recognizes one of the deer, and tries to communicate with it. That deer recognizes Rok and turns its head to reveal a chained collar, and looks quite angered. He pacifies one of the deer. The other three deer continues charging. One of the deer tries to charge towards Johnny and misses initially, but is able to gorge him in a second charge. Another deer tries to charge at Johnny but misses. The pacified deer locks antlers with the deer that attacked Johnny and knocks it out. The deer, quite weakened, fumble their moves and the pacified deer mauls them. One deer remains. Jed is unable to cast his arrows as the heated metal burns him, and he drops the arrows and his bow. Johnny and Rok deliver the final blows, and take out the deer. The pacified deer is spared and is taken in, for the purposes of the tournament, as a member of the Tentative Onworlders. They name the deer, Chopper. The next challenger is "Will.i.am" who hails from the Land of the Wind. He takes out a lute and strums it, casting out psychic damage which only affect Rok. Rok casts a web on Will.i.am and ensnares him. Jed taunts Will.i.am, spits bars, and casts silence on him. Will.ia.am is unable to do a rebuttal. He is completely humiliated and he taps out. The final challenger is the beast that was defeated by James, who had been able to clear it. The beast presented is the Bread Monster. It is a giant gingerbread imbued with evil fire from the Fire Kingdom, with the sugar of fear, and the butter kept moist by the tears of the orphans of Breezehome. It starts lumbering towards them. Johnny aims a fireball on the knees of the Bread Monster. Rok sends out his mirror images to attack the monster. The heat ends up baking the monster's legs as it develops shin guards and tries to kick Johnny. Chopper tries to dive towards the legs of the Bread Monster and pierces through the burnt batter. Johnny lobs more attacks on the monster. The monster grabs two cream puffs and places it on its chest, and attempts to squeeze the cream onto Rok's mirror image illusions. Rok casts a ray of frost at the monster and attempts to make the legs more brittle. Jed casts earth tremor and causes the monster to stumble and lose one of its legs. Johnny asks Rok if they can create water by combining ice and fire to weaken the monster. The monster then rips out one of its cinnamon roll as a whip. Johnny is able to cast water into the monster as its dough becomes soggy. Johnny, stuck on the monster's back, gets pulled in. He is able to resist and break free. The monster, enraged, is an oozing, gooey mess. Jed tries to grab a bite from the monster. He tries to tear off a piece but the elasticity of the goo whiplashes him back into the goo. Johnny casts a lightning shock which recooks the goo. The monster becomes more solid again and it tries to throw a gummy punch against Rok. It then ends up missing and it hits itself. It throws another punch and hits one of Rok's clones. Jed, already stuck on the monster, uses heat metal and uses his arrows to hack onto the monster. Johnny casts oil onto the monster and ignites a fire on the monster and the flames begin spreading. It attempts to grab all of the party members but misses. Rok then grabs a sharp beam, breaks it and rolls it across the dough on the monster. They defeat it. Afterwards, they reconvene with Duran. They are told the final test will be an interview with the nobles. Duran also narrates the tales of their two other members. Juan Pablo and Nasoj, through their impressive demonstrations of faith and strength during the crucifix event, earned their respective tokens and were able to undergo modified trials for the tournament.
