The Colony of Courtenay Bay (1545–1680), also known as the Courtenay Bay Colony, was an English settlement on the east coast of Kolumbia, and the first of four colonies collectively known as New England. The Courtenay Bay colony was the first major English colony established in Kolumbia, dating to the settlement of Atlanta founded by Issac Scrivener in 1545. Courtenay Bay Colony was located east of the eponymous bay and the Courtenay River (OTL Delaware River), which separated the colony from New Berkshire to its west. The colony grew out of two locations: the settlements on the eastern coast, such as Atlanta and Cape Grey, and those along the Courtenay River, such as Evesham and Battersea, the latter becoming the colony's capital in 1590.
The colony initially maintained peaceful relations with the local Lenni Lenape natives of the region, however, by the late 16th-century relations broke down. The colony's refusal to trade firearms to the Lenape for fear of arming a group so close to home, led to the Lenape being subjugated by their better armed rivals, the Iroquois, during the height of the Beaver Wars. The colony would also play a crucial role against the Swedish and Hanseatic colonies of the Midatlantic during numerous colonial wars.
The colony was administered by the English Company until its chater was revoked in 1570 by Edward XI, afterwhich the colony was transfered to royal authority as a crown colony. In 1722 the Colony of Courtenay Bay was combined with three of its neighbors – New Berkshire, Unamia, and Edwardia – into the Dominion of New England, with its capital at Perth.
