History

Diplomatic relations between Sierra and South Africa began in 1858 after the South African Republic recognized the Kingdom of Sierra, and a diplomatic mission to South Africa was established soon after. During the Anglo-Boer War, Sierra remained politically neutral throughout the conflict, although the Sierran public sympathized with the Boers. Some Sierran citizens volunteered to the fight in the war. In 1910, Sierra recognized the South African Republic's successor, the Union of South Africa.

The embassy of Sierra, Pretoria has relocated a total of 6 times throughout its history. Its most recent move occurred in 2008 when the current chancery building was refurbished and leased by the South African government.
