William von Halle was the President of the Rätian Union from 1560 until 1563, having succeeded Marcus Cranach. Born in Saxony, he attempted to pursue a policy of expansionism, for example, trying to incorporate Ansbach into the Union. Most of these attempts failed. During the Trier Crisis of 1563, and the Imperial Election following the death of the Emperor Henry X, William von Halle resigned in protest upon hearing the Emperor's nomination of Charles, Duke of Livonia to be the next Emperor. He was succeeded by Gerard von Beauhuman, who was willing to accept Charles as the Emperor.
