Referendums related to the Conference of American States
This is a list of referendums related to the Conference of American States. Since 1978, there have been a total of 20 referendums related to the Conference of American States by member states, candidate countries, and their respective territories, with several other referendums held by other countries outside of the CAS. The majority of referendums that have been held are surrounding whether or not a sovereign state should join the CAS as part of the accession process, however a country doesn't need to hold a referendum in order to applu fopr membership and begin the process of accession into full membership or as part of a ratification of a given treaty. Other CAS-related referendums have been held on other topics such as the potential adoption of the amero and participation in CAS instittuions, agreements, and other elated policies.
As of 2022, only two countries have held referendums surrounding the continuation of a country's given membership in the CAS; Mexico and the Kingdom of Sierra. Mexico joined the CAS in TBD shortly after the fall of socialism in the country, but held a referendum to withdrawal which took place in 2008 and ended in victory for the Leave campaign, however controversies surrounding the referendum have continued since surrounding its legitimacy, issues surrounding it being a free and fair election, corruption, and other acts of meddling. In 2019, the Kingdom of Sierra held a referendum on its future on its membership in the Conferece; to continue it or withdrawal, ending in a victory for the Remain campaign. Sierra is the only founding member state to have held a membership referendum since the CAS was established.
Territories of CAS member states have also held referendums surrounding joining the CAS and/or its agreements and treaties. Columbian realms, sovereign states where K.S. monarch Elizabeth II serves as head of state (all former colonies of Sierra) have applied for membership and/or participation in CAS institutions, agreements, and policies. Cozumel held a referendum in 2021, the most recent to date, surrounding the potential application of membership in the supranational union and has emerged as a potential candidate country alongside the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam, which have also applied for membership and greater integration into Anglo-America and international community.
