Lara is an Atlantean female pirate who is a member of Akula's Friends. She is under the apprenticeship of Serena Lockwood and is training to become the sailsmaster of the crew's ship, the SS Friend Ship. Lara was recruited into the crew shortly after they received command of the ship.
Lara was orphaned as a child and was adopted by Markello, a bugbear shopkeeper at Markello's Marvel Collection. Throughout her adolescence, Lara was mocked and ostracized for her apparent clumsiness and naïveté, as well as her alleged lack of talent. She had aspired to become part of the Atlantean Navy but was rejected, and soon became a serial reject at other institutions including the Center of Research and Academics. Her reputation and personality led her to being blacklisted and banned at a number of establishments, including the Grand Library of Atlas. During a routine attempt to gain entry at the library, she was scouted out by Serena Lockwood and Jué Zosteif as a potential candidate for the sailsmaster role of Akula's Friends. After gaining permission from Lara's father, Lara was placed under the care of Lockwood. Due to her inexperience, Lara was made an apprentice of Lockwood until she could prove she was seaworthy in combat and utility.
