Conworlding, also called worldbuilding, is the process of constructing an imaginary world, sometimes associated with a whole fictional universe. The resulting world may be called a constructed world or a conworld. The term "worldbuilding" was popularized at science fiction writers' workshops in the 1970s. Developing an imaginary setting with coherent qualities such as a history, geography, and ecology is a key task for many science fiction or fantasy writers. Worldbuilding often involves the creation of maps, a backstory, and people for the world. Constructed worlds can enrich the backstory and history of fictional works, and it is not uncommon for authors to revise their constructed worlds while completing its associated work. Constructed worlds can be created for personal amusement and mental exercise, or for specific creative endeavors such as novels, video games, or role-playing games. Eviltoast05 • Centrist16 • Mythopoeia • Dawnstar • Solace • F0rsaken • EmperorAlexander99 • Yuutarou Patron Article of the Month – 2059 Atlantic hurricane season by Soilaf, selected by Eviltoast05 The 2059 Atlantic hurricane season is the most active and damaging Atlantic hurricane season in recorded history, with an incredible 58 tropical depressions, 55 named storms, 36 hurricanes, and 20 major hurricanes - far exceeding the previous record set in the 2034 season, in addition to smashing the global record of 54 depressions & 39 tropical storms previously set in the 1964 Pacific typhoon season. The unrivaled hyperactivity of the season was attributed to the lingering effects of human-caused climate change during most of the 20th and the 21st centuries, which - combined with an exceptionally strong La Niña event - permitted tropical development almost anywhere within the Atlantic Ocean and contributed to the historic intensities of several storms during the year. For the first time in history, the National Hurricane Center abandoned their typical Atlantic hurricane season boundaries of June 1-November 30, which were far exceeded during the record-breaking season: the first storm of the year, Tropical Storm Angelina, formed on March 11 and the final system of the season, Hurricane Heather, actually persisted into 2060, dissipating on January 5. For almost the entire season, storms formed at a record pace (an incredible 15 tropical cyclones, including four Category 5 hurricanes, developed during the month of September). The initial naming list used during the season - extended to 26 names with the addition of letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z - was exhausted, necessitating the usage of an auxiliary list. In unprecedented circumstances, the auxiliary list of 21 names also ran out, which forced the NHC and WMO to draft up a second backup list of another 21 names. A total of nine Category 5 hurricanes formed during the 2059 Atlantic hurricane season: Laurence, Vladimir, Yelena, Elaine, Landon, Mirabel, Nicholas, Rana, and Cothran. |
