Conworlding, also called worldbuilding, is the process of constructing an imaginary world, sometimes associated with a whole fictional universe. The resulting world may be called a constructed world or a conworld. The term "worldbuilding" was popularized at science fiction writers' workshops in the 1970s. Developing an imaginary setting with coherent qualities such as a history, geography, and ecology is a key task for many science fiction or fantasy writers. Worldbuilding often involves the creation of maps, a backstory, and people for the world. Constructed worlds can enrich the backstory and history of fictional works, and it is not uncommon for authors to revise their constructed worlds while completing its associated work. Constructed worlds can be created for personal amusement and mental exercise, or for specific creative endeavors such as novels, video games, or role-playing games. (read more)

Summary: Poland-Lithuania (Polish: Rzeczpospolita Polska-Litwa, Lithuanian: Lenkijos-Lietuva Žečpospolita), officially the Federal Republic of Poland-Lithuania, is a federal semi-presidential republic located in Eastern Europe, bordered by Germany to the west, the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south, Ukraine and Belarus to the east, and Latvia to the north. As a sovereign state, Poland-Lithuania consists of two constituent countries - Poland and Lithuania - each of which has its own government overseen by a joint Parliament of Poland-Lithuania headed by the president. Having a land area of 424,598.43 square kilometers, Poland-Lithuania is the fifth largest country in Europe (after Spain) and 59th in the world (after Iraq). Poland-Lithuania has a population of approximately 44,914,730, slightly larger than that of Argentina, with a largely temperate seasonal and maritime climate, the latter being seen along the coast of the Baltic Sea. The capital and largest city of Poland-Lithuania is Warsaw, with other major settlements including Vilnius, Kraków, Gdańsk, and Karaliaučius.

The establishment of the independent Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1025 and 1253 respectively preceded the formation of a Polish-Lithuanian state, which would be informally established following the Union of Krewo in 1386 and subsequent marriage of Jadwiga of Poland and Władysław II Jagiełło of Lithuania. An official bi-federal union of the two states would be established following the Union of Lublin in 1569, in which Poland and Lithuania voluntarily formed an alliance known as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Commonwealth would continue to consolidate power as one of the largest countries in Europe throughout the middle ages, adopting an unusually liberal political system and having a high level of religious tolerance and ethnic diversity within its population.

Poland-Lithuania has a strong economy and political presence in Eastern Europe. As a key power in the Intermarium Alliance, Poland-Lithuania is a member of the European Union and the League of Nations and maintains a high standard of life, average income rate, level of education, health, and political and economic freedoms. The Polish-Lithuanian government provides universal free tertiary education and social securities for its citizens, and is a leading center for scientific research globally. With its complex history and ethnic diversity, Poland-Lithuania remains a developing center of culture throughout Europe and the world. (more...)

About the Wiki

Logo of the Constructed Worlds Wiki.svg

Originally founded on Wikia, the Constructed Worlds Wiki, affectionately known as Conworlds, is a place to host and share constructed worlds, alternate history, and other creative endeavours. Projects of any nature are welcome here, and creativity is encouraged!

On Mainspace articles we suggest that writers follow our Manual of Style. The majority of content on the Mainspace is written in an encyclopedic format like on Wikipedia. For all other kinds of pages, there are a number of namespaces anyone can use. Editors can opt in their pages to our content assessment system, vote to feature articles at the village pump, and even earn awards and decorations for their writing.

It is important to fully review and understand our policies and guidelines before editing on our Wiki. The Admins generally prefer to let people self-regulate, but it is for the sake of keeping Conworlds an inclusive and safe community that we insure compliance with these policies. Particularly of import are the protocols around copyrights.

Aside from our policies, it is also important that users understand the Four Cs: civility, collaboration, consensus, and cooperation.

Civility: Editors should treat each other with courtesy, good faith, and respect.
Collaboration: Editors should make an effort to work together on shared projects.
Consensus: Editors should participate in decision-making and seek arrangements which are suitable to all.
Cooperation: Editors should never wantonly antagonize or hinder others.

Finally, new editors or users should understand what Conworlds is not. This website is for free content: by editing the Constructed Worlds Wiki, you agree to license any text you add under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License 4.0 (Unported). Attribution and Copyright Compliance Task Force.svg

The Attribution and Copyright Compliance Task Force (abbreviated ACCTF) is a Conworlds task force and project which aims to identify and resolve attribution issues involving the articles, templates, files, and categories of the Constructed Worlds Wiki. Due to the nature of the Constructed Worlds Wiki first and foremost as a worldbuilding community wiki that seeks to emulate the appearance and style of Wikipedia, many of its articles are based on or inspired by Wikipedia. Consequently, it may feature articles which may or may not properly attribute its Wikipedia sourced material. Material which has been copied, transposed, imported, or derived from Wikipedia (and elsewhere) which fail to have proper attribution may be in violation of Wikipedia's or other similar sites' copyrights. The Constructed Worlds Wiki administration takes this very seriously, as non-compliance or negligence may have legal ramifications. To that end, the ACCTF was created on 3 March 2023 to meet the demands and standards of proper attribution and copyright compliance with respect to Canadian copyright law. If you are interested in assisting the wiki with this important responsibility, please join the ACCTF today!

Patron Article of the Month – Nathaniel Cannon by Mythopoeia, selected by Mythpoeia

Nathaniel Cannon (June 9, 1836 – November 8, 1917) was an Astorian military officer, statesmen and pioneer who served as the first president of Astoria from 1867 to 1879. Appointed by the Constitutional Assembly as commander of the Revolutionary Army in 1866, Cannon led the forces of Astoria to victory in the Oregon Civil War and the Eugene War. He served on the Provisional Executive Committee and chaired the 1867 Constitutional Secession of the Assembly which promulgated the Constitution of Astoria. In Astoria he is referred to as the "Father of the Republic" and is entombed at the National Adoratory of the Republic.

The 1870 Astorian presidential election was the first presidential election in Astorian history. During Cannon's interim presidency, former members of the Republican Party and Canadians from the former British Columbia coalesced into the Whig Party. Although united in their displeasure for Cannon, they had little in common regarding policy. The Whigs nominated George Andrews, a former Hudson Bay Company administrator, as Cannon's opponent. Cannon won the election on September 3, 1870, with 11,328 votes, approximately 64.84% of the popular vote, and 36 electoral votes.

In contemporary Astoria, questions regarding the legitimacy of the election still lingers among those in academia but since the early 1980s interest in the matter among the general population has faded. Historians are divided on whether Cannon employed fraudulent means to win the 1870 election, with 58% of the members of the Astorian Association of Archivists and Antiquarians agreeing in 2021 that unethical means were utilized. Only 34% of those belonging to the Arts and Humanities Class, Section II of the Astorian Academy of Arts and Sciences agreed. According to a 2019 poll conducted by National Canvass, 9% of Astorians believed Cannon employed fraudulent means to win the election, 32% agreed that election violence took place during the early republic, and 86% of those polled agreed with the statement "If Nathaniel Cannon utilized fraudulent methods in 1870 to win the presidential election it happened for a just reason."

Numerous municipalities and townships have been named in Cannon's honor, and modern attempts to rename counties and medium-sized cities to commemorate him have occurred after his death. Canongrad, with a population of 267,093, serves as the provincial capital of Sakhalin in Ussuria and is the most notable namesake. Cannonsburg, with a population of 21,094, is the prominent namesake in Astoria. Across the country many streets honor him, with the most prominent being Cannon Boulevard in the nation's capitol.

Cannon is memorialized by various structures, complexes and buildings across the country, the most significant being the National Adoratory of the Republic, constructed between 1925–1930, and the Cannon Monument between 1965–74 in Asphodele. Cannon is listed and his likeness is depicted among the the pioneers of the Oregon Trail, honored at the Monument to the Pioneers. Fort Cannon, located on the border between Olympia and Tahoma, is the largest military base by manpower and equipment in Astoria.
