The 2002 Winter Olympics (French: Jeux olympiques d'hiver de 2002), officially the XIX Olympic Winter Games (French: XIXes Jeux olympiques d'hiver) and commonly known as Thunder Bay 2002, was a winter international multi-sport event held from February 8 to February 24, 2002, in Thunder Bay, Superior. This was the second Winter Olympics hosted in Superior, the first being the 1936 Olympics in Yellowknife, and the seventh time it was hosted in North America.
Following a trend, the 2002 Olympic Winter Games were also larger than all prior Winter Games, with 10 more events than the 1998 Winter Olympics in Harrachov, Czech Republic. From sporting and business standpoints, this was one of the most successful Winter Olympiads in history; records were set in both the broadcasting and marketing programs. Over 2 billion viewers watched more than 13 billion viewer-hours. The Games were also financially successful.
